Welcome to the
Sydney, Coast & Highlands
Welcome to the website of the Sydney, Coast and Highlands Region NSW, Australian Alpaca
As the birthplace of the alpaca industry, the Sydney, Coast and Highlands Region is geographically compact, yet climatically diverse. When Charles Ledger first introduced alpacas into Australia, it was unknown how well alpacas would adapt to these varying conditions. Alpacas have thrived in all areas of this Region, from the highlands to the coast and on the urban fringe, with herds ranging from broad-acre farmers to boutique studs and hobby farmers.
To honour the pioneer of the alpaca industry, the Region holds the Charles Ledger Show each year in September. This is a dedicated alpaca show. Agricultural Shows held in Camden and Moss Vale also have strong alpaca representation. Another popular event is the annual NSW New Breeders Seminar conducted by the Region.
This region has many breeders who have specialised in different aspects of the industry such as breeding black or grey animals, breeding suris, and in more technical areas such as the SRS (Soft Rolling Skin ®) breeding system and the national embryo transfer scheme.
National agricultural excellence comes together at the Sydney Royal Easter Show each year where there are many alpaca exhibitors from all Regions in Australia, providing strong competition and exceptional quality.
If you are interested in attending any of the above events please look at our Calendar of Events page for dates, information and relevant contact details.
