During National Alpaca Week alpaca farms all over our region will be opening their farm gates to the public.
This is the perfect opportunity for anyone considering owning alpacas, or just wanting to learn more, to get up close and personal with these extraordinary animals.

Another great day at Hawkesbury Show

The weather was kind to the exhibitors at the 2012 Hawkesbury Show on Saturday.
A great day was put on by the Hawkesbury Blue Mountains Region with over 120 animals being judged.

Congratulations to all in our region that made the effort to support this show and well done to those who took home ribbons.

Supreme Champion was Alpacapartners French Kiss exhibited by Millpaca Alpaca Stud.

SC&H Region Education Day

Gastrointestinal Worms

26th May 2012

Our region will conduct an education day on gastrointestinal worms in alpacas.
This notice is to gauge the interest of region members in attending such a course.

The day will cover:

Description of the common worms affecting alpacas
Worm Life cycles
Symptoms of infection
Plans to control worms
Faecal egg counts

It will take the form of an illustrated discussion and a practical demonstration of faecal egg counts.
It will not be a course to teach the skill of faecal egg counts.

The planned day is Saturday 26th May 2012 from 0930 and will run for about half a day.
Lunch and morning tea will be supplied.

Participants are invited to bring a faecal sample(s) for testing.
The sample needs to be fresh and kept in the fridge.
Several members of the region will be there with their microscopes.

The expected cost is $20-$30 per person.

Alpaca Showcase at the Easter Show

Come and visit us at the Alpaca Showcase in the dairy pavilion at the Royal Easter Show. You can see shearing demonstrations, spinning & weaving, things to buy and of course lots of alpacas.

PROfarm Courses

PROfarm courses are delivered locally by highly skilled and respected NSW DPI staff. Many of the courses are subsidised to reflect the public benefits provided by the adoption of more sustainable farming practices. On-demand courses, tailored to the specific needs of individual groups, are also available. Some courses are eligible for FarmReady reimbursement grants.

Camden Show Results

A great day was had on a beautiful sunny day at the Camden Show.
The judge, Joanne Ham commented on the conclusion of judging how impressed she was with the standard of animals presented.
The Supreme Championship was awarded to Ambersun Fortune Seeker shown by Millpaca Alpaca’s.

Showmanship & Handling at the Camden Show

This years Camden show will have a Showmanship & Performance Handling event, held on Friday 23rd. It is open to all school children and will be run by Jim Murray, a showman well known and loved by kids all over the state. It is exciting and inclusive for kids, who do not necessarily own alpacas, as the animals are provided for both a training session at 10am, after which the children can then choose to enter for the event at 2pm that same afternoon.
This event is about demonstrating the skills of a handler to train their alpaca for safe and manageable performance when participating at a show. Further, it demonstrates the necessity of preparation prior to an event. Download the Schedule & Entry forms here.

Fleece Region of the year

Congratulations go to the Southern Region who won the Fleece Region of the year competition at the Royal Canberra show with 742 points. However, congratulations should also go to our region who came in 2nd place with 712 points. Well done to all who entered fleeces for our region.

Canberra Show 2012

Only a few days until the Canberra Show. The first big show of the new year.
It’s always a great couple of days of judging, catching up with friends and checking out the new junior alpacas.

Watch out for the results of the fleece competition, hopefully our region can win the Fleece Region of the Year!
What could we spend the $500 prize on? Any ideas?
