Sunday 9th October 9am to 2pm at
Coolaroo, Woodlands Road Mittagong 2575 NSW

Presented by SCH Region of the Australian Alpaca Association

Inspired by the high quality in the alpaca cloth being produced by Alpaca Ultimate, due principally to the meticulous classing of each fleece as it comes off the animal at shearing by Merilyn Mathews and Penny Pittard, I have invited them to come and teach us their protocols and process.

Whilst buyers of fleece may differ in their classing specs and criteria, the emphasis of this workshop is to give participants the fundamental skill of recognising poor or medullated skirtings, and separating them from the saddles. The bottom line is that good classing will optimise your dollar return per woolclip, and ensure that only the best quality products are produced from your fleece.

Other trainers and speakers from a pool of expertise will individually assist each participant to understand and learn these skills.

Other topics on the day will include:

Your animal herd preparation well prior to shearing

Your shed preparation to ensure a smooth operation on the day

Selling/promoting or manufacturing your own fleece?

Everyone welcome/ RSVPs are essential. $10.00 contribution for lunch/am&pm Tea.

RSVP info@coolarooalpacas.com.au or Janie Hicks 0419 995 553

Further discussion on the day towards forming a cluster group in SCH Region may also be of interest to participants. The key to establishing a commercial fleece industry in Australia is for alpaca breeders to take a professional approach to fleece preparation. Because the industry is comprised of large and small breeders, a cooperative approach is needed to pooling fleeces all classed by the same technique.

In 2010, a group of three breeders in WA formed the first “cluster”, combining their skirted fleeces of several years, hiring a fleece tester, and inviting an experienced classer to assist in testing and classing the fleeces into lines for sale. The prices received were very satisfactory from the breeder’s perspective. This “cluster” has now grown to 23 members at last count.

For a cluster or group to successfully prepare fleeces in this manner however, the fleeces must be presented well skirted and meeting buyers’ specifications as to length, lack of contaminants, guard hair etc. The workshop at Coolaroo will address these issues, trying to counter variability in fleece with uniformity in classing.
