  • New Breeders Seminar

On the 18th June the region conducted a new breeder’s seminar. The seminar was held at the property of K & A Wray and was attended by 12 people who were a mixture of existing and potential breeders. Five others were to attend but were forced to cancel.
The intention of the day was to introduce potential breeders to the joys of alpaca breeding and explain the basics of what is involved. A list of the topics covered and the speakers is listed below:

Introduction Elaine Buckman
An outline of the Alpaca Industry Ian Davison
Why be an Alpaca Owner Ian Davison
Where to Begin with Alpacas Wendy Billington
Setting Up a Farm for Alpacas Ken Wray
Feeding Alpacas Ken Wray
Alpaca Husbandry Naomi Jut
Where to Buy Alpaca Ian Frith
Alpaca Health Libby Garner
Showing Wendy Billington
Fleeces Ian Proctor
Where to Get Help Ken Wray

It was a full on day with a balance between theory and practical demonstrations. The papers were collected and given to the participants for reference.
Despite a very strong and cold westerly wind, the day seem to be a success and will provide a basis for future seminars.
My thanks go to all the speakers and to Christine Talbot who arranged the printing of the papers.
